Neutron imaging and its application for industrial research

Beside the scientific relevance of neutron imaging this talk presents selected project highlights with industrial collaborators. Neutron imaging with its complementary character compared to X-rays can be used as a non-destructive testing method for a broad spectrum of industrial applications. Examples of the ongoing progress and its application on tomography, dynamic radiography and neutron grating interferometry are shown.
We will present the impact of standard neutron tomography on the example of the diesel particulate filter technology used in passenger car and truck applications where neutrons are presently the only possibility to obtain information about the three-dimensional distribution of soot and ash in canned diesel particulate filters. Dynamic neutron radiography (dNR) can be used as a unique option to visualize stroboscopic cyclic processes. Three examples will be presented. (i) Looking inside the combustion chamber of a motor of a fired two-stroke engine running at full throttle and the use of tracered fuel. (ii) Visualization of the oil distribution in a wet-running multi-disc clutch system of a motorbike for the determination of the interior oil distribution. (iii) Investigation of cavitation effects and visualizing the fluid dynamics of the oil distribution of car shock absorber systems in operation. Finally we will show how the neutron grating interferometry method allows studying the bulk ferromagnetic domain structures in grain and non-grain oriented steel laminations under the influence of externally applied DC and AC magnetic fields which are the key components in transformers and electrical motors.
