The application of the neutron reflectometery (NR) method for structural studies at the buried oil-water interface will be discussed. The technique involves the entrapment of a stable thin oil layer between a silicon solid substrate and an aqueous sub phase. The thin oil (a few microns thick) is prepared reproducibly by spin-coating an oil film on to an oleophilically modified silicon surface. The method allows for full contrast variation measurements.
The intrinsic roughness of the bare oil−water interface as determined from NR will be discussed first. This is then followed by (i) The neutron reflectivity study of the phospholipid 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine at the oil–water interface as a function of spread amount and two isotopic contrasts. (ii) The Interaction of the nucleic acid, DNA, with a model biomembrane at the oil-water interface and (iii) Adsorption of thermally responsive nanogeles at the oil-water interface and their interactions with a lipid monolayer will also be reported.
