In nature, biomolecules are often organized as functional thin layers in interfacial architectures, a very popular example being biological membranes. Biomolecular layers play also important roles in biotechnological applications, for instance when they are the result of adsorption processes. For the understanding of many biological or biotechnologically relevant processes, detailed structural insight into the involved biomolecular layers is required.
Neutron scattering techniques like small angle scattering, diffraction, reflectometry are rapidly developing in this area as they allow characterising biomembranes and detecting sub-nanometer structural changes induced by different molecules.
The talk will review some recent progress made in LSS instrumentation and sample environment, applications of neutron scattering at the ILL in the structural characterisation of biomembrane systems, and will provide perspectives for future developments including projects for upgrading the LSS instrument suite.
