Scientists Meet Scientists

"Wednesday" Coffee Talk by Dr. Markus Hölzel (MLZ) about "Crystal Structures of Fluorine revisited by Neutron Diffraction"

SPODI Prof. Florian Kraus and his colleague Dr. Sergei Ivlev at the SPODI powder diffractometer.

On 2 May 2019 (exeptionally a thursday) Dr. Markus Hölzel (MLZ) will talk about “Crystal Structures of Fluorine revisited by Neutron Diffraction”.

Fluorine might be the last stable chemical element for which the crystal structure is still under debate. The latest studies by X-Ray dirffraction on solid fluorine (α and β modifications) were carried out about 50 years ago. In particular the low temperature α modification has been investigated only once – but two different space groups were proposed.

A research team has now clarified the actual structure of the fluorine using neutrons from the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz.

Relevant Publication:
The Crystal Structures of α- and β-F2 revisited. Sergei I. Ivlev, Antti J. Karttunen, Markus Hoelzel, Matthias Conrad, Florian Kraus. Chemisty – A European Journal, 2019. DOI:10.1002/chem.201805298.

Prof. Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday! Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen from time to time to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.

We look forward to seeing you there!
